Sources are reporting that Red Sox General Manager, Theo Epstein and Closer Jonathan Papelbon have worked out a deal reported to be worth $9.35 million for the 2010 season this afternoon. According to ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes the deal could be worth a total of $9.5 million if the incentives in the contract are met. This is the second year straight the Theo worked out a deal with Papelbon to avoid an arbitration. This now makes Papelbon the 7th highest paid closer in the bigs.
With Papelbon agreeing to terms today keeps Theo Epstein’s streak of not going to arbitration since becoming the GM in 2003 is still alive.
Papelbon had 38 saves in 41 oppurtunities with a 1.85 ERA, with a 1-1 record in 66 appearances last season. The biggest blown save of the season for Paps came in game 3 of the ALDS against the Angels.
